pixel.play a true award winner!

Innovation in Digital media winner, SA short screen awards

ANAT’s pixel.play project won the ‘Innovation in Digital Media’ category at last night’s SA Short Screen Awards.

pixel.play is a digital arts education program that engages young artists in creative practice through the use of everyday technologies to make creative screen content for the mobile phone screen.

The pixel.play program has been developed by the Australian Network for Art & Technology, led by emerging producer Sasha Grbich. Over the past 18 months, the program has delivered workshops and mentoring to over 200 young artists (13 -22 years old) from over 200 schools in both metropolitan and regional SA, with major programs running in Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Adelaide.

Accepting the award last night on behalf of ANAT, Executive Director Dr Melinda Rackham acknowledged the ‘real winners’ – the young artists who participated, ANAT’s former Director Julianne Pierce who initiated the project, Producer Sasha Grbich and workshop facilitators Holly Owen and Hugh Davies.

Dr Rackham also took the opportunity to recognise the project’s sponsors, which include Country Arts SA, SA Youth Arts Board, SA Film Corporation and the Australia Council for the Arts through their Emerging Producers in the Community program.

While producing fantastic artworks, the program also develops confidence with creative practice and digital technology amongst participants and the most appropriate exhibition platform for the works are the mobile phone handsets of students who participated, now screening in a schoolyard near you!
