If you think ballet is all about the tutu, think again.

We asked three acclaimed choreographers and three giants of Australian composition to collaborate on entirely new works for the Interplay programme, highlighting the electric partnership between dance and music. The result - three world premieres that will demonstrate the athleticism and invention of dance today.

The three ballets created for Interplay cover as much artistic ground as do the stories of their creation: an abstract spiritual journey, an atmospheric dreamscape, and a Greek myth given new life. New York-born Nicolo Fonte's new work is based on composer Ross Edwards' abstract narrative. The work is structured as a classic quest that moves through chaos to a higher state. A brand-new production by The Australian Ballet's resident choreographer Stephen Baynes is accompanied by an original score by Richard Mills. There are several themes within this new work - the idea of the adagio, dreams, ghosts, the love duet and floating just above reality. Unlike the other two ballets conceived for Interplay, choreographer Matjash Mrozewski's new piece with musical composition by Gerard Brophy brings a classical narrative to the stage. It's a story that has inspired artists for hundreds of years.

Interplay is as much for lovers of music and design as for those looking for a more physical dance experience.
